Best Bariatric Portion Control Containers:
Dietitian’s Favorite Picks

Are you tired of feeling like Goldilocks every time you try to find the perfect bariatric portion control containers? "This one's too BIG, this one leaks, and this one's just plain ugly!"

It's enough to make you lose your appetite. But fear not, because I'm here to help you find the container of your dreams (or at least the one that won't give you nightmares).

Bariatric portion control containers are simply smaller sized containers used to help you stay on track with your healthy eating habits and portion control goals. You have a smaller stomach after weight loss surgery, so of course you’re gonna need smaller containers!

Use them for:

  • Bariatric Meal Prep
  • Getting Portions Sizes “Right”

I’ll share my favorite ones here and also give you some key factors to consider in purchasing them.

Best Bariatric Portion Control Containers

Portion Perfection Bariatric Food Containers

This is a portion control container designed specifically for weight loss surgery by a bariatric dietitian.

It's made to hold 1 cup of food, divided into half protein and half low carb vegetables. If you’re far enough along you can also visually see how to include a small amount of quality carbs.

You can be confident that food portion sizes are correct for your needs with this bariatric must have! It’s best used once you’re past the recovery stages. You can freeze leftovers in portion-controlled sizes or use it to pack your lunch.

Other Glass Containers: WITHOUT Sections

A Note About Size and Shape

  • Use ½ -1 cup containers (120-240ml) to assure small portions
  • Use 1-2 cups containers (240-480ml) if you’re planning to eat right out the container
  • A rectangular shape container saves space and maintains organization in the pantry or fridge

Containers that don’t have divided sections are great for soups, stews, crockpot and Instant Pot meals.

Having a container with a leakproof lid is a MUST if you’re transporting these kinds of foods! The last thing you want is for your carefully prepared chicken and broccoli to end up in a soggy mess at the bottom of your bag.

One of my favorite brands that has locking lids:

Other Glass Containers: WITH Sections

  • 2 Sections: Two compartments are great when you just need to carry protein + veggies
  • 3 Sections: Best for 6+ months out, when you can eat protein, veggies, and a little bit of quality carbs

Mason Jars

Don't forget about Mason Jars:

  • For Salads: Once you’re able to eat salads, use (wide mouth) mason jars to meal prep in advance and carry them with you.
  • For Protein Shakes and Smoothies: You can also use a handheld blender (like this Vitamix Immersion Blender) and blend protein shakes right in a large (32oz), wide mouth mason jar and drink right up. Much less clean up than using a blender!

Why I Like GLASS Bariatric Portion Controlled Containers:

Can be used in the microwave or oven to reheat food

NO chance of dangerous chemicals leaking into your food

Won’t stain

Leak proof

The Negative:

They’re heavy

No matter how careful you are, inevitably they break!

Bento Boxes

Bento Boxes are so cute they make eating more FUN!

  • "Toddler Size:" 4 sections that fit 1 to 2 ounces each: Perfect if you’re only a few months post-surgery and can only tolerate very tiny portions. In fact, one whole bento box could very well be a full day’s worth of food when you’re very early post op (Four, 1oz meals!)
  • "Medium Size:" 3 sections that fits 3 to 4 ounces each. This would be appropriate if you’re  at least 6 months post-op.

Why I Like Bento Boxes for Bariatric Portion Controlled Containers:

They’re just so small and cute!

They work well to keep your food groups separated.

They’re especially good for carrying cold foods like deli meat and raw vegetables and fruits.

They’re light!

They come in different sizes to accommodate wherever you are in your post op journey.

The Negatives:

You can’t put stainless steel bento boxes in the microwave to reheat your food.

They’re not always leakproof.

PRO TIP

It's always a good idea to have a few extra containers on hand in case of accidents (you know, like that one time you accidentally dropped your glass portion control container and it broke into a million pieces)!

Trust me, it's better to be prepared than to have to scramble for a replacement at the last minute.

The Bottom Line

Say goodbye to the days of mindlessly shoveling food into your mouth and hello to the world of portion control containers.

These little guys will revolutionize your meal prep and make you feel like a portion control pro. So don't wait any longer, upgrade your meal game with the best bariatric portion control containers on the market. Your stomach (and your pants) will thank you.
